As we roll into the summer months, our campaign for District 2 Supervisor is gathering steam. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be unveiling exciting new pieces of the campaign, including a new website, our district campaign headquarters and various initiatives to harness the energy and ideas of all of Janet’s supporters. Keeping you informed and up-to-date on each phase of the campaign will be among our highest priorities as we march toward Election Day.
Therefore, I’d like to take this opportunity to address recent media reports regarding incumbent District 2 Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier’s position vis-Ă -vis the 2010 race and our campaign.
Currently, Supervisor Alioto-Pier is barred from seeking re-election under the term limits imposed by the city charter. A City Attorney’s opinion from February, 2008, explained in detail why she is ineligible to run for another term as District 2 Supervisor.
Last week – more than two years after the City Attorney issued his opinion – Supervisor Alioto-Pier filed a lawsuit against the city seeking declaratory relief and a writ of mandate allowing her to be placed on the 2010 ballot.
Today, the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board concluded that Supervisor Alioto-Pier’s “arguments simply do not compute.” The Chronicle editorial relies upon a clear, objective reading of the city charter and Supervisor Alioto-Pier’s complaint, and provides an accurate snapshot of the issue and its logical resolution.
I strongly encourage you to read the editorial by clicking here.
Still, Supervisor Alioto-Pier will have her day in court and the issue will ultimately be resolved by a Superior Court judge. Although we regret the confusion and turmoil injected into the race by her late challenge, we respect Supervisor Alioto-Pier and her right to question the opinion. We will keep you informed about any developments in the case and the judge’s ultimate decision.
In the meantime, there is a race to be won! Janet looks forward to hearing your questions, concerns and most of all, your ideas on how to make San Francisco and District 2 a better place.
Onward,
Patrick Collum
Campaign Manager, Janet Reilly for District 2 Supervisor
