An Interim Mayor For the Good of the City

Posted on October 12, 2010

If Mayor Newsom is elected Lieutenant Governor, he will vacate the Mayor’s office in January. Current policy calls for the sitting Board of Supervisors to appoint his successor. But some believe the decision will be made by the newly elected Board of Supervisors — of which I may be a member.

I have been asked how I would vote on this very important issue.

Mayor Gavin Newsom: Why I Support Janet Reilly for Supervisor

Posted on October 5, 2010

Mayor Gavin Newsom

Dear Friends,

As a longtime resident, small business owner and former supervisor from District 2, San Francisco’s economic health has always been important to me. As mayor, it is my top priority. We need leaders at City Hall who share this focus and who will work hard to promote economic growth.

That’s why I’m supporting Janet Reilly for District 2 Supervisor.

Janet and her family are stakeholders in this city. Their family businesses provide jobs for dozens of local residents and they have continually reinvested in San Francisco in good economic times and in bad. For Janet, maintaining a thriving economy isn’t an abstract concept – it’s personal.

As First Vice President of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, Janet has shown herself to be a pragmatic and fiscally responsible leader. In her role she helps to oversee the district’s $236 million budget and the operation and maintenance of two major transit systems, as well as a world-famous landmark.

Janet will also bring valuable business experience to the Board of Supervisors. As head of public relations for Mervyns Department Stores, a Fortune 500-owned company with $5 billion in annual sales, Janet operated effectively within a high-stakes environment and launched a widely acclaimed program to aid women transitioning from welfare to work.

Janet’s drive to find fiscally responsible solutions to tough problems was on display again when she partnered with businessman Scott Hauge to found a free health clinic for working uninsured San Francisco families. The privately funded clinic, to be staffed by volunteer retired doctors and nurses, will provide an invaluable service to the city’s under-served citizens – at no cost to taxpayers. It will be a great compliment to the network of coverage we’ve worked so hard to create here in San Francisco.

Even in this difficult economic climate, we have taken tremendous strides to facilitate growth, create new jobs and position the city to attract and retain the industries of the future. To continue this important work, we need leaders like Janet Reilly on the Board of Supervisors – thoughtful, independent and dedicated. I urge you to give her your vote on Election Day.

Sincerely,
Mayor Gavin Newsom

Recap of Tonight’s District 2 Debate

Posted on October 1, 2010

Tonight, the San Francisco Young Democrats and the City Democratic Club held their District Two Debate, and Janet was the clear winner – demonstrating that she is the most qualified candidate on the ballot in November. Her long-standing dedication and service to her community has given her a better grasp of the issues and allowed her to build the relationships necessary to hit the ground running on day one. 32 days before the election, the voters of District Two are recognizing that Janet is the number one choice for Supervisor in November.
